Travel Insurance: Your Safety Net for Complete Peace of Mind

When planning a vacation, we tend to focus on the fun stuff—the destination, the ship, the resort, the flights, the excursions, and, of course, where we’re going to eat! Travel insurance probably isn’t at the top of that list. But it should definitely be part of the conversation.

I like to think of travel insurance as something you purchase hoping you’ll never have to use. You’re not buying it because you expect something to go wrong. You’re buying it because sometimes…life happens.

Do I Really Need Travel Insurance?

This is a question I hear a lot, and my answer is pretty simple: I strongly recommend it.

Think about how much money you may have invested in your vacation. Depending on the trip, you could have thousands—or even tens of thousands—of dollars tied up in cruise fares, airfare, hotels, excursions, transfers, and other arrangements.

Now imagine having to cancel shortly before departure because of an unexpected, covered illness, injury, or another qualifying event.

Without the appropriate travel insurance coverage, you could potentially lose a significant portion of that investment.

And cancellation is only one reason to consider coverage.

The Full Scope of Travel Insurance Protection

One of the biggest misconceptions about travel insurance is that it’s simply “cancellation insurance.” It's not just about cancelling your trip.

Depending on the policy you purchase, travel insurance may provide coverage for things such as:

·       Trip cancellation or interruption

·       Emergency medical expenses while traveling

·       Emergency medical evacuation

·       Travel delays

·       Missed connections

·       Lost, stolen, delayed, or damaged baggage

·       Certain unexpected events before or during your vacation

Every policy is different, and this is important: travel insurance does not cover everything.

Coverage, exclusions, limits, pre-existing medical condition provisions, and eligibility requirements can vary considerably. That’s why I encourage my clients to actually review the policy—not simply check a box because it says, “travel protection.”

But My Heath Insurance Covers Me, right?

Maybe. Maybe not.

This becomes especially important when traveling internationally or cruising outside the United States.

Your regular health insurance may provide limited coverage—or potentially no coverage—for certain medical services outside its normal network or outside the country. Medicare generally provides very limited coverage for healthcare received outside the United States, although there are some exceptions.

That makes this an important question to answer before you leave home.

Imagine becoming seriously ill or injured while traveling and discovering that you need medical treatment—or even transportation to an appropriate medical facility.

That is not the time you want to start figuring out what your insurance covers.

Protect More Than Your Vacation & Your Peace of Mind.

You’ve waited months for this vacation. You’ve planned it. You’ve paid for it. You’ve probably spent plenty of time thinking about everything you want to see and do.

The last thing I want is for you to spend your vacation worrying about every “what if.”

What if my flight is cancelled? What if my luggage doesn’t arrive? What if I get sick? What if something happens back home and I need to return early?

A good travel insurance policy won’t prevent those things from happening. What it can do is provide certain financial protections and assistance when a covered situation occurs.

And that can make an enormous difference.

Cruise Line Protection or Third-Party Insurance?

This is another area where travelers have choices.

Cruise lines often offer their own vacation protection programs, while independent travel insurance companies offer separate policies. Neither option is automatically the right choice for everyone.

The important thing is to compare the coverage, not just the price.

Look at what is covered, the coverage limits, exclusions, medical benefits, evacuation coverage, cancellation provisions, and whether there are time-sensitive benefits that require purchasing the policy within a certain period after your initial trip deposit.

The cheapest option isn’t necessarily the best value.

One More Important Point…

Travel insurance is something you should consider early in the planning process, not a few days before you leave.

Some policies offer benefits that are only available when coverage is purchased within a specified period following your initial trip payment or deposit. Waiting until the last minute could mean certain options are no longer available.

When I bring up travel insurance while we’re planning your vacation, I’m not trying to add another expense to your trip.

I’m trying to help you protect the vacation we worked so hard to create.

My goal at Uphoff Travel Experiences isn’t simply to get you booked and send you on your way. It’s to help you understand your options so you can make informed decisions about your entire travel experience.

Hopefully, you’ll purchase travel insurance and never need it.

But if something unexpected happens, you may be very glad you did.
