Cruise Travel 101: Ports, Food & How to Maximize Your Experience

Whether you're a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, one question always comes up: What's the reality of cruise travel? Let me answer that in one simple sentence: You can be as busy as you want to be or as relaxed as you want to be on a cruise.
That's the beauty of it. Wake up at 6am and hit the gym, or sleep until lunch (or later) if you want. Book a bunch of activities, spend time in the casino, see the shows, dance, laugh, or just lounge at the pool with a cocktail of your choice. Everything is right there on your floating hotel as you move between destinations without the hassle of packing and unpacking.
Exploring Each Port: Do Your Research First
Each port is unique, and most have plenty of options for exploration. The key is knowing what's available before you arrive.
Each cruise line offers excursions you can book in advance, but you also have the option to explore on your own. Here's my recommendation: Research each port before your cruise. Find out if you can easily walk to shopping, restaurants, and bars, or if you'll need to book transportation or use public transit to get where you want to go. Better yet – have your travel agent do all the research!
For first-time cruisers especially, I recommend booking excursions through the cruise line. The big advantage of this is getting expert guidance on the lay of the land, rather than becoming a "pier runner" - you know, that person who misses the ship! 😊
Once you've cruised a few times and you're comfortable navigating ports independently, you have all the freedom in the world. But that first experience? Let a professional show you the way.
Food: The Unsung Star of Cruise Travel
Food options are always plentiful on a ship! You've got your main dining room, the buffet, and specialty restaurants - though those usually come at an extra cost. This is where a cruise company can make you want to come back again and again, or make you want to try another.
Here's what I've learned:
If the main dining room isn't quite hitting the mark for you, specialty restaurants are always worth the investment. Yes, it's an extra cost, so keep that in mind when selecting your cruise line. But here's the truth: A premium and luxury experience can be had on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian - pretty much all of them. I've seen it firsthand, and I can show you how to find it.
In fact, I'll be diving deeper into this subject soon, breaking down what each cruise line does best and how to get the most value from your dining experience. It's one of my favorite topics, and there's a lot to unpack.
